Maximum Velocity 3 - Tuesday, February 13, 2007 The Intellibus Maximum Velocity 3 track cycling challenge had lots of action to offer. The event was run as a Tri-nations selection event. Explosive cycling at a blistering pace was delivered by the top riders in South Africa. Morné Blignaut (GYPSY SPORT) smashed the South African flying 500m record when he set a time of 28.16s. This is 0.8s better than the old record of 28.96s that was also set by him at the Bellville velodrome last year. Michael Thomson (Nola cycling club) was one of the top performers on the day. He won the elite 15km scratch race and also got a 2nd in the 1500m and a 3rd in the match sprint. Chris Willemse (CSC) won the elite points race while his team mate Garth Thomas won the elimination race. Thomas and Willemse raced as the current national Madison champions. This combination was too strong for the other Madison contenders at the selection event and they took victory in this team event. Morné Blignaut (GYPSY SPORT) continued his dominance in the sprint events with convincing victories in the elite match sprint and elite 1500m. National elite, junior and ladies teams as well as a federation team were chosen to compete against Germany, Kazakhstan, a junior Netherlands team and a combined European team. The teams that were selected are: Elite: Morné Blignaut, Chris Willemse, Garth Thomas, Gary Rabie, Michael Thomson & Dean Edwards Juniors: Bradley Potgieter, Jean Spies, Matthew Funnell, Kenneth Ketterer, Robin November & Marius Bester Ladies Elite: Ronel Van Wyk, Lynette Burger, Carla Rabie, Ilze Bole, Magdalene Wasserman & Joanne Van Der Westhuizen Federation team: Gadi Chait, Martin van Wyk, Michael Pepper, Durwan Benjamin, James Louter & Reniell Matthysen
