Road bicycle A road bicycle is a racing bicycle designed for use on paved roads. Road bicycles have drop handlebars for the use in bunch races, but can be fitted with time trial handlebars to improve aerodynamics in time trial events. These bikes have multiple gears. The rear hub carriers a cluster that usually consists out of 10 sprockets. Normally these sprockets vary from 12-23 teeth, but some clusters will have bigger sprockets with more teeth for very hilly terrain. The front chain drive consists out of two blades of normally 39 and 53 teeth each. Some touring bikes have a third, small, front blade to assist in pedaling up steep inclines. Gears are shifted by two handlebar mounted gear levers that control a rear and front derailleur. Modern day road racing bicycles are made from aluminium, carbon fibre or in some cases titanium. Bikes are made across the world and many commercial frames are manufactured in the Far East. Sought after hand crafted bikes usually originate from Europe in countries such as Italy.
